MMDA Bans E-Bikes, Trikes on Main NCR Roads

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) issued a reminder on Friday about the upcoming restriction on electric bikes, tricycles, and similar vehicles on key roads across Metro Manila, effective Monday, April 15.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes emphasized that hefty penalties will be levied on those who violate the rule.

A fine of P2,500 will be imposed on individuals found breaking the rule. Moreover, vehicles without proper licenses or registration documents will be impounded.

As outlined in MMDA memorandum circular no. 4, the ban applies to e-bikes, trikes, tricycles, and “kuligligs” on several major thoroughfares, including:

The decision to ban electric bikes, tricycles, and similar vehicles on major roads in Metro Manila is a complex issue that can be viewed from multiple perspectives. On one hand, it aims to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety for all users. Removing these vehicles from busy thoroughfares could lead to less congestion and smoother travel for public transport and private vehicles.

On the other hand, the ban may pose challenges for individuals who rely on e-bikes and trikes as affordable and efficient modes of transportation. These vehicles offer a convenient alternative for short trips and reduce reliance on traditional, often polluting vehicles. The ban may impact daily commuting options for residents who use these modes of transport.

How will authorities and the public address the transition to ensure a smoother commute for all?
